Body Issues / Constriction

An investigation through costumes of what does it mean to have a body, especially as a person socialized as female in a patriarchal society.
Has it ever been easy being a body? The uncomfortable truth of taking space in a society where it is given only inside certain boundaries. These enclosures might seem to fit only certain people, but the truth is that no reality can reach our fantasies.

Coming from a fashion city, I have witnessed across my childhood and teenage years the toxicity of the request for a perfect body and the struggle that comes with the reality of not being bidimensional. A corset is a timeless symbol of constriction into divine standards, of bending reality in a never-satisfactory image. As I didn’t have enough time to collaborate with someone else, I had to use my own body and battle with looking at its imperfections without trying to cover them, trying to accept and maybe even love myself, one step at the time.

The two corsets were used in the video Fassaden 2

The corsets are made of a blend of cotton and linen, using metal boning, in order to give them the possibility to decay and decompose, just like us.
